Uyuni Salt Flat

It is the largest and highest salt desert in the world. Here you can find wonderful landscapes, islands where giant cactus grow, hotels made of salt and places where the ground merges with the sky.

FULL DAY ITINERARY: We leave to the Salt Flat in a 4×4 car. We will visit the Train Cemetery and the community of Colchani, where salt is processed using traditional methods. We will continue our adventure until we reach Incahuasi Island, located 80 km away. From its summit, in the middle of giant cactus, we will be able to appreciate the surprising extension of the sea of salt and we will see the majestic Tunupa volcano. We will be able to feel the magic of the place, where the horizon disappears.

We will have time to take pictures playing with the perspective.

At the end of the visit, we will have lunch and return to Uyuni.

DAY 1: SALT FLAT

We leave to the Salt Flat in a 4×4 car. We will visit the Train Cemetery and the town of Colchani, which is located on the edge of the Salar and is the place where salt is processed using traditional methods. We will continue our adventure until we reach the Incahuasi Island, located 80 km away. From its summit, in the middle of giant cactus, we can appreciate the amazing extension of the sea of salt and the Tunupa volcano. We will have time to observe the landscape and take pictures.

Accommodation: Hostel in San Juan.

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

 

DAY 2: SUD LÍPEZ

We move away from the Salar to visit the lagoons of high altitude: Laguna Honda, Laguna Ramadita and Laguna Hedionda. Each of them has an incredible beauty.

We will also visit a different ecosystem: the Siloli Desert, one of the driest deserts in the world, where the popular Stone Tree is located. Finally, we will arrive at the Laguna Colorada, so called because of its reddish color, where the andean flamingos live. 

It will be a journey where the desert and the lagoons will provide us with peace and serenity, finding ourselves in the middle of nowhere.

Accommodation: Hostel in Huayllajara.

DAY 3: SUD LÍPEZ – UYUNI

Early in the morning, we will leave the Laguna Colorada to visit the geysers, where we will have the feeling of being on another planet. Then we will go to the thermal baths, where we will enjoy a relaxing bath surrounded by a beautiful landscape. Then we will continue to the Laguna Verde (green lagoon) whose waters have a magical appearance. Afterwards, we will make a stop in the emblematic Dali Desert, so called because of the interesting colors of its mountains that resemble the paintings of the master. Finally, we will return to the bus station of Uyuni to return to La Paz.

Weather: Cold, dry and windy. Average temperature of 10°. At night, temperatures can drop well below 0°. During the rainy season (December to March), it is not possible to enter the Sud-Lipez but you can appreciate an unparalleled spectacle: the salt flat becomes a giant mirror.

Altitude: Uyuni: 3660 m., Salar de Uyuni 3646 m., Sud Lípez 4000 m. 

Location: Potosí.

Ecosystem: Hundreds of flamingos can be found in the lagoons of Sud Lípez, with luck you can find some desert foxes. Among the vegetation are the giant cactus that inhabit the Incahuasi Island.

Travel time: 10 hours approximately from La Paz.

What should I bring?

Insect repellent, sunscreen, cap or sunglasses, warm clothes, windbreaker coat, comfortable and resistant shoes, balaclava to protect your ears from the wind, sleeping bag.
