THE MAGIC OF THE MOUNTAINS

A long trekking trip where we will cross the majestic Royal Mountain Range. We will wake up in the middle of mountains, lagoons and we will delight ourselves with breathtaking views of landscapes. We will be able to completely disconnect from the outside world during these days.

Experience in trekking and camping is required.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL TO LA PAZ

Arrival to La Paz city and transfer to the hotel. Free day to rest and get used to the altitude.

DAY 2: ACLIMATATION. LA PAZ – COPACABANA – SUN ISLAND

Before climbing to the high altitude of the mountains, we must acclimatize to the altitude to avoid health problems. The best way to do this is with a visit to Copacabana and Sun Island, where we will have time to breathe the new air. 

We will leave La Paz in the morning and arrive in Copacabana at noon. We will have lunch and visit La Horca del Inca, a pre-Inca astronomical observatory, the Cathedral and the traditional markets. Then we will climb the Cerro Calvario to watch the sunset.

Overnight in Copacabana.

DAY 3: COPACABANA – SUN ISLAND – COPACABANA

In the morning, we will go to the port of Copacabana to take the boat to the town of Challapampa and begin a hike to the Inca ruins of Chincana and the Sacred Rock of the Incas. Important archaeological sites, examples of the rich pre-Columbian history of the island. We will cross the island from north to south to finally arrive at Pilkokaina where we will take a boat to return to Copacabana. We will enjoy incredible views along the way.

DAY 4: COPACABANA – JAYLLAWAYA RIVER – WARA WARANI

Departure from Copacabana around 8:00 am in direction of the Royal Mountain Range. We will arrive at the village of Jayllawaya, where we will have lunch and start a new trek. We will climb the beautiful and peaceful Wara Warani valley (4620 m.a.s.l.) following the stream.

DAY 5: WARA WARANI – KHOTIA LAGOON

The trek continues quietly until we reach the Wara Warani lagoon (4930 m.a.s.l.), which is located at the foot of the snowy mountain of the same name. We fall into a small lake with turquoise waters, while another part of the lake has intense blue waters; it is undoubtedly a magical panorama. We will go around the lake and climb to the southeast towards a steep pass (5050 m.a.s.l.) and then descend to an isolated valley at an altitude of 4760 m.a.s.l. After crossing this valley, we will cross the Minchin Pass and finally descend to Khotia Lake (4450 m.a.s.l.), where we will set up our camp.

DAY 6: KHOTIA LAGOON – AJWANI LAGOON

With a more marked trail, we will start the day in the direction of the Paso Contador (4760 m.a.s.l.), which offers a beautiful view of a wide valley that slopes towards the peaks to the east. We will descend into the valley and cross a semi-swampy area near the Surakhota lagoon (4410 m.a.s.l.). Finally, we will climb up the mountainside to reach Ajwani Lagoon (4615 m.a.s.l.).

DAY 7: AJWANI LAGOON – JURIKHOTA LAGOON

We will start from the Ajwani Lagoon, a beautiful place where many ducks nest, we will be able to relax and connect with the peace of nature. Afterwards, we will continue walking until we reach the Milluni pass, located at 4910 m.a.s.l., and then we will descend to the Sistaña Lagoon (4670 m.a.s.l.).

We will go up to a second pass: the Janchallani Pass to discover the Condoriri massif, one of the most beautiful glaciers of the Cordillera. Then, we will reach the Jurikhota Lagoon (4700 m.a.s.l.), and climb up the moraine to the foot of the glacier.

DAY 8: JURIKHOTA LAGOON – CONGELADA LAGOON (FROZEN LAGOON) – PICO AUSTRIA – CHIARKHOTA LAGOON

We will follow the Jurikhota lagoon by its right shore to reach the moraine, then we will arrive to a magic place: the Laguna Congelada or Frozen Lagoon (4880 m.a.s.l.), where we will stop to appreciate its turquoise waters.

We will then climb some steep rocks to reach the Austria Pass, located at 5140 m.a.s.l. The Pico Austria is (5300 m.a.s.l.) is a steep climb in a scree, but the effort is worth it. Once at the top, we will enjoy a breathtaking view and the descent to the Chiarkhota Lagoon will be a real pleasure.

DAY 9: CHIARKOTA – LA PAZ

After spending the night at the Chiarkhota lagoon, we will prepare for an ascent to the Aguja Negra mountain, enjoy a dazzling view of the landscape and return to the lagoon for lunch. Finally, we will return to La Paz.

DAY 10: LA PAZ – SAJAMA

We will leave for our last destination: Sajama. We will visit the Curahuara de Carangas Church, also known as the Sistine Chapel of the Altiplano, where we can find beautiful murals of biblical passages. We will also see the Chullpas, ancient Inca burial tombs of cylindrical shape. Overnight at the hostel in Sajama.

DAY 11: SAJAMA

As the first activity of the day, we will head towards the famous geysers of Sajama and we will continue walking towards the beautiful Khasiri Lagoon (4850 m.a.s.l.), near the Chilean border. At the edge of the lagoon we will observe giant coots, whose nests are made of large floating platforms made of algae and grass. There will be a steeper ascent to the Laguna Sorapata (4925 m), where we will camp surrounded by impressive sulfur-colored mountains.

DAY 12: SORAPATA LAGOON – CHIARKHOTA LAGOON – THERMAL BATHS – SAJAMA

We will walk along the Sorapata Lagoon, we will have the possibility to observe the flora and fauna of the place as viscachas (small rabbit – Andean squirrel) and the medicinal plants always used by the inhabitants. Then, we will climb a pass located at 5050m. We will descend to the Chiarkhota lagoon (5010 m) which we have seen before, we will continue walking until we reach the plateau of the Sajama Park and we will be able to take a relaxing bath in the Thermal baths, considered as medicinal waters. We will return by car to the hostel.

DAY 13: SAJAMA – LA PAZ

We will leave Sajama to return to La Paz city where we will arrive around noon. Free afternoon.

DAY 14: LA PAZ. FREE DAY.

You will have the whole day at your disposal to visit the city and buy souvenirs.

DAY 15: TRANSFER TO THE AIRPORT

Pick up from the hotel to the international airport.

MEALS

All accommodations include breakfast.

In Copacabana and Sun Island all meals are in restaurants.

During the mountain trekking the cook will cook the food. In case of a large group, a dining tent will be set up, if the group is small, meals will be served in the kitchen tent. The meals consist of breakfast, box lunch and dinner (soup, main course and dessert).

WEATHER

  • In La Paz:The climate is usually cold. The warm seasons (spring and summer) are between September and April. The average maximum is 20° and the minimum is 10°. It is also during this time that it rains. The cold and dry seasons (autumn and winter) are between May and August with an average maximum of 15° and a minimum of 5°. 
  • In Copacabana – Sun Island: Similar to the climate of La Paz. Between 8° and 16°.
  • In the Royal Mountain Range of Los Andes: The climate is cold and very windy. Average temperature between 14° and 17°. It is recommended to avoid the rainy season (November to March).
