From Los Andes To The Amazone

A trip where we will visit two completely different ecosystems: the cold and dry climate of the mountains and the warm and tropical climate of the jungle. A sample of the biological diversity of Bolivia.

Experience in trekking and camping is required.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL TO LA PAZ

Arrival to La Paz city and transfer to the hotel. We will leave you the day free to rest and get used to the altitude. Night in La Paz.

DAY 2: ACLIMATATION. LA PAZ – COPACABANA – SUN ISLAND

Before climbing to the high altitude of the mountains, we must acclimatize to the altitude to avoid health problems. The best way to do this is with a visit to Sun Island, where we will have time to breathe the new air.

We will leave La Paz in the morning and arrive at Copacabana at noon. Immediately, we will take a boat to visit the Sun Island, where we will visit the ruins of the Pilkokaina Palace, also called “the Temple of the Sun”, which is an important archaeological site of Inca origin. Then we will climb the Yumani stairs, at the top we will find a beautiful stone fountain known as the “Fountain of Life” and we will observe the interesting systems of cultivation terraces. The place gives off a mystical atmosphere that transports us back to those times when man was deeply connected to Mother Earth.

Accommodation: Hostel in Sun Island.

Included Meals: Breakfast, lunch “APHTAPI” (lunch of Aymara origin) and dinner.

 

DAY 3: COPACABANA – LA PAZ

We will leave the island to return to Copacabana and visit the Basilica, where the “Virgen de la Candelaria” is located, a virgin that receives the adoration and devotion of people beyond Bolivia. We will also visit “La Horca del Inca”, an emblematic pre-Inca astronomical observatory that offers a magnificent view of Titicaca Lake . We will have lunch and return to La Paz city.

DAY 4: LA PAZ – AJWANI

Our destination will be the village of Ajwani (4760 m.a.s.l.). From this point we will enjoy the beautiful view of a valley filled with high mountains. We will then take a pleasant walk in the surroundings.

DAY 5: AJWANI – JURIKOTA

We will continue our hike, where we will be able to observe the high altitude birds that are found in the area and the lagoons formed by the melting of the different snow-capped mountains. 

The objective of this day is to reach a summit at an altitude of 4910 m.a.s.l., we will be able to appreciate the famous west face of Huayna Potosi. Then, we will descend towards the Jurikota Lagoon, which is located at an altitude of 4670 m.a.s.l., where we will camp (5 hours trek).

DAY 6: PICO AUSTRIA – CHIARKOTA – LA PAZ

Last day of trekking. We will climb to 5140 m.a.s.l. on the Austria peak, belonging to the Condoriri group. From there we will admire a beautiful panoramic view of the Condoriri and Huayna Potosi mountains. We will descend to reach the Chiarkota Lagoon, which is located at 4680 m.a.s.l. (5 hours trek). In the afternoon we will return to La Paz city.

DAY 7: RURRENABAQUE. THE JUNGLE PART 1

We leave at 8:30 a.m. on a boat trip that lasts 3 hours, enjoying spectacular scenery of the Beni and Tuichi rivers to enter the Madidi National Park. We will arrive at the eco lodge “Mashaquipe” around noon where we will have a refreshing fruit juice as a welcome, we will have our room and then have lunch.

In the afternoon, we will hike along one of our trails, where we will observe a variety of plants, gigantic trees and learn about their multiple uses in medicine, handicrafts and construction. If we are lucky, we will be able to see some monkeys, wild boars, birds and a variety of insects.

DAY 8: RURRENABAQUE. THE JUNGLE PART 2

After breakfast, we will take the boat to visit “El Farallon de las Parabas”, one of the best places in the Madidi National Park where we will take a walk to observe macaws, parrots and other birds as well as to enjoy the impressive view of the Amazon and the rivers that flow through this place, then we will return to the ecolodge.

After lunch we will return to Rurrenabaque where we will arrive at 4:30 pm.

DAY 9: RURRENABAQUE. PAMPA PART 1

We leave at 8:30 a.m. to Santa Rosa, during the trip we will be able to observe sloths, anteaters, toucans and other animals. At noon we will take a boat for about 15 minutes to reach our eco lodge “Las Tortugas”, where we will have lunch. In the afternoon, after a rest we will go out to navigateon the Yacuma River where we will enjoy, observe and take pictures of lizards, caimans, birds, capybaras, turtles among others. Before returning we can swim with the beautiful pink dolphins that live in this paradisiacal place (this activity depends on the season).

DAY 10: RURRENABAQUE. PAMPA PART 2

We will get up early (5:00 a.m.) to see the sunrise and listen to the awakening of the pampas which is a concert of sounds of howler monkeys and various birds. We will return to the hostel to have breakfast, then we will leave for a boat ride on the Yacuma River in search of a suitable and special place to walk and look for the impressive anaconda. During our excursion, we will continue to observe a variety of animals such as: birds, capybaras, caimans, turtles among others. 

After lunch, we will return to Rurrenabaque where we will arrive around 4:30 pm.

Finally, we will take the flight back to La Paz. Overnight in La Paz.

DAY 11: LA PAZ. FREE DAY

You will have the whole day at your disposal.

 

DAY 12: TRANSFER TO THE AIRPORT

Pick up from the hotel and transfer to the airport for your international flight.

The price is based on double rooms. If you want a higher or lower category hotel than the one indicated, please let us know in your message.

  • In Sun Island: Hostel.  
  • During the mountain trekking: Camping. Two people per tent.
  • In the Amazon: Eco-lodge. Reduced electricity during your stay in the jungle. An additional fee is charged for special rooms with private bathroom.

 

MEALS

All accommodations include breakfast.

In Sun Island all meals are in restaurants.

During the mountain trekking the cook will cook the food. In case of a large group, a dining tent will be set up, if the group is small, meals will be served in the kitchen tent. The meals consist of breakfast, box lunch and dinner (soup, main course and dessert).

During your stay in Rurrenabaque you eat all meals at the lodge.

WEATHER

  • In La Paz:The climate is usually cold. The warm seasons (spring and summer) are between September and April. The average maximum is 20° and the minimum is 10°. It is also during this time that it rains. The cold and dry seasons (autumn and winter) are between May and August with an average maximum of 15° and a minimum of 5°. 
  • In the Royal Mountain Range of Los Andes: The climate is cold and very windy. Average temperature between 14° and 17°. It is recommended to avoid the rainy season (November to March).
  • In the Amazon: Warm and tropical climate with an average temperature of 23°.

Effort: Moderate level.

A good physical condition, being used to walking long distances and experience in camping are required.
