Copacabana is a town located on the shores of Titicaca Lake. Traveling by boat we reach the Sun Island, the largest island of the lake and where one feels completely isolated from the world.

FULL DAY ITINERARY: We will leave La Paz towards Copacabana and head to the port of Yampupata, where we will board a boat to move to the Sun Island. Here we will appreciate the Pilkokaina Palace ruins, also called the Sun Temple, which is an important archaeological site of Inca origin. Then, we will climb the Yumani Stairs, at the top we will find a beautiful stone fountain known as “The Fountain of Life” and we will observe the interesting systems of cultivation terraces. The place has a mystical atmosphere that transports us to past times where man was deeply connected to Mother Earth.

Finally, we will return again to Copacabana, and later to La Paz.

Day 1

We will leave La Paz in the morning to reach Copacabana, then we will head to the port of Yampupata, where we will board a boat to go to the Sun Island and enjoy our lunch. We will enjoy the ruins of the Pilkokaina Palace, also called “the Temple of the Sun”, which is an important archaeological site of Inca origin. Then we will climb the Yumani Stairs, at the top we will find a beautiful stone fountain known as the “Fountain of Life” and we will observe the interesting systems of cultivation terraces. 

Accommodation: Hostel in Sun Island.

Meals included: Lunch and dinner.



Day 2

We will leave the island to return to Copacabana and visit the Basilica, where the “Virgen de la Candelaria” is located, a virgin that receives the adoration and devotion of people beyond Bolivia. We will also visit the “Horca del Inca”, an emblematic pre-Inca astronomical observatory that offers a magnificent view of Lake Titicaca. We will have lunch and return to La Paz city.

Weather: Cold. Similar to the climate in the city of La Paz. Between 8° and 16°.

  • Copacabana: 3850 m.a.s.l.
  • Isla del Sol: 3814 m.a.s.l.

Location: La Paz.

Ecosystem: The vegetation is abundant and you can also observe cultivated fields. Among the animals are alpacas, pigs, cows and donkeys. 

Travel time: Between 3 hours and 3 hours and a half from the city of La Paz.

What should I bring?

Light clothing for the day and warm clothes for the night, cap or sunglasses, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, preferably trekking shoes.
