Finding Colorful Landscapes

A journey in which we will discover green landscapes full of vegetation, as well as the blue of the mythical Lake Titicaca, the intense white of the magical Salt Flat and the earth color of the arid deserts of South Lipez.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL AND VISIT TO THE SPIRIT VALLEY

Arrival at La Paz airport and transfer to the hotel, free morning.

In the afternoon we will visit the Valle de las Animas, an interesting geological formation of elongated and high rocks that end in peaks that point to the sky. This is a place with great spiritual meaning for the local people who live around it.

DAY 2: LA PAZ – COPACABANA – SUN ISLAND

We will leave for Copacabana early in the morning. After a 3-hour drive, we will arrive to Copacabana and visit its beautiful church, which is an important pilgrimage center. Afterwards, we will take a boat to Sun Island for a hike on the southern part of the island. It will be a liberating walk where the blue of the lake, the vegetation and the fresh air will be the protagonists.

Finally we will arrive at the inn where we will have dinner and spend the night.

DAY 3: COPACABANA – SORATA

After breakfast, we will take a boat back to Copacabana. Immediately, we will head to our next destination: Sorata. We will take a moment to have lunch and stroll around the town. Afterwards, we will head to the Hanging Bridge, whose surroundings are full of beautiful vegetation and the only sounds are the flowing of the river and the birds’ singing.

At the end, we will return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.

DAY 4: SORATA – LA PAZ

The first activity of the day will be a visit to the San Pedro Grotto, a cave inhabited by bats and a lagoon where we will be able to take a boat ride. The place is considered a sacred and magical space.

As a second activity we will visit “Take Kala”, a place full of trees and flowers of different species. We will discover the history of the cave paintings, we will approach the waterfalls and the so-called caves of the elves. After lunch we will return to La Paz.

DAY 5: LA PAZ – SAJAMA

Continuing our tour through nature, we will take a bus to Sajama. After 2 and a half hours we will be visiting the famous “chullpares”, ancient burial tombs that are located on one side of the road. Afterwards, we will visit the beautiful Sistine church of Curahuara, an architectural jewel of the 16th century, which has in its interior extraordinary murals of biblical images.

We will then arrive at the town of Sajama, where lunch awaits us. Then we will head towards the fascinating geysers that exist in the region and surely on the way we will find dozens of llamas and alpacas. 

We will have dinner and spend the night at the hostel.

DAY 6: SAJAMA – LA PAZ – UYUNI

As a second day in Sajama, we will have breakfast and take a short walk to the queñuas forest, and then visit the infallible hot springs where it is advisable to take a bath, as these are considered medicinal waters. Afterwards, we will have a snack and return to La Paz city. 

At the end of the day, we will go to the bus terminal towards our last destination: the famous Salt Flat. We will spend the night in a sleeper bus.

DAY 7: SALT FLAT. PART 1

We leave to the Salt Flat in a 4×4 car. We will visit the Train Cemetery and the community of Colchani, where salt is processed using traditional methods. We will continue our adventure going deep into the salt flat until we reach the Incahuasi Island, which is full of giant cactus. From its summit, we will appreciate the amazing extension of the sea of salt and we will be able to see the imposing Tunupa volcano. We will be able to observe the magic of the place, where the horizon is not clear and one can take pictures playing with perspective.

We will spend the night in San Juan. Lodging is shared.

DAY 8: SUD LÍPEZ

On this day we will visit the high altitude lagoons: Laguna Honda, Laguna Ramadita and Laguna Hedionda. We will also visit a different ecosystem: the Siloli Desert, one of the most arid deserts in the world, home to the popular Stone Tree. Finally we will arrive at the Laguna Colorada, named for its reddish color, it is home to Andean flamingos. We will spend the night in a shared lodge.

DAY 9: SUD LÍPEZ – UYUNI

Very early in the morning, we will leave the Laguna Colorada towards the geysers, where we will have the feeling of being on another planet. Afterwards, we will visit the Thermal baths, continuing to Laguna Verde and the iconic Dali Desert, so called because of the interesting colors of its mountains.Finally, we will return to the town of Uyuni, in order to return to the city.

Overnight in a sleeper bus.

DAY 10: LA PAZ. FREE DAY.

We will arrive to La Paz city and transfer to the hotel. You will have all day at your disposal.

DAY 11: TRANSFER TO THE AIRPORT

Pick up from the hotel and departure to the airport to take the international flight.

What should I bring?

  • Warm clothing. The cold and wind are very intense in the deserts.

  • Sunscreen.

  • Hat and sunglasses. This is essential, the sea of salt is so white that we must protect our eyes.

  • Trekking shoes.

  • Bathing suit. To bathe in the Thermal baths.

  • Mosquito repellent.

  • Sleeping bags.

  • Earmuffs, sunglasses.

MEALS

All accommodations include breakfast.

All lunches are in restaurants, except in Uyuni.

All dinners are in restaurants.

On days 7, 8 and 9 you will have lunch en route.

WEATHER

The destinations we will visit have a cold climate in general.

  • In La Paz:The climate is usually cold. The warm seasons (spring and summer) are between September and April. The average maximum is 20° and the minimum is 10°. It is also during this time that it rains. The cold and dry seasons (autumn and winter) are between May and August with an average maximum of 15° and a minimum of 5°. 
  • In Copacabana – Sun Island: Similar to the climate of La Paz. Between 8° and 16°.
  • In Sorata: The average maximum temperature is 17° in the warm seasons and 16° in the cold seasons. And the average minimum temperature is 8° in the warm seasons and 4° in the cold seasons.
  • In Sajama: Temperate climate slightly warmer than in La Paz city with an average of 17°.
  • In the Salt Flat, San Juan and Huayllajara (Sud Lípez Region): Cold, dry and windy. Average temperature of 10° At night, temperatures can drop below 0°.

DIFFICULTY LEVEL

Effort: Level 2

Circuit accessible to all. The only long hike is the one in Sun Island, the path is not difficult but it could be tiring if you are not used to walking.

NOTE

The entire tour in the Salt Flat and Sud Lipez is done in 4×4 cars, we will spend a lot of time in the transport.  We will make stops to eat and visit the attractions.
